The Universe is a strange place

About the Lecture Perhaps the universe is not so much strange as brimming with lovely paradox. The search for such beauty seems to lie at the heart of Frank Wilczek’s work. Twentieth century physics, from Einstein through Wilczek’s own Nobel Prize-winning efforts, involves demonstrating the existence of a topsy-turvy reality: for instance, that such sub-atomic particles as quarks and gluons, which have little or no mass, “orchestrate themselves into not just protons and neutrons but you and me,” according to Wilczek. “How is it possible to construct heavy objects out of objects that weigh nothing?,” he asks. Only by “creating mass out of pure energy.” These particles are essentially “excitations in otherwise empty space.” Says Wilczek: “That suggests something …beautiful and poetic: the masses of particles are not like, or similar to or metaphorically suggested by—they are the tones or frequencies of vibration patterns in dynamical voids.” The theory of quarks and gluons and the strong interaction accounts quantitatively for “the mass of protons, neutrons and ultimately you and me and everything around us.” But physics has not yet squared away all aspects of the universe. Wilzcek says that “in cosmology, we meet our match, and don’t know what’s going on.” This is because scientists can’t account for much of the mass in the cosmos. 70% of this mass is in “dark energy,” which is pushing the universe apart. Wilczek hopes that explanations for the dark stuff will emerge through improving equations, unifying theories of different interactions and extending their symmetries. “Beautifying equations leads not to ugly consequences but beautiful surprises,” he concludes.

BBC - The Secret Life of Chaos 2010 Part 16

Playlist: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=664F2AE1160FF884 "Chaos theory has a bad name, conjuring up images of unpredictable weather, economic crashes and science gone wrong. But there is a fascinating and hidden side to Chaos, one that scientists are only now beginning to understand. It turns out that chaos theory answers a question that mankind has asked for millennia - how did we get here? In this documentary, Professor Jim Al-Khalili sets out to uncover one of the great mysteries of science - how does a universe that starts off as dust end up with intelligent life? How does order emerge from disorder? It's a mindbending, counterintuitive and for many people a deeply troubling idea. But Professor Al-Khalili reveals the science behind much of beauty and structure in the natural world and discovers that far from it being magic or an act of God, it is in fact an intrinsic part of the laws of physics. Amazingly, it turns out that the mathematics of chaos can explain how and why the universe creates exquisite order and pattern. The natural world is full of awe-inspiring examples of the way nature transforms simplicity into complexity. From trees to clouds to humans - after watching this film you'll never be able to look at the world in the same way again." Check out my blog for more videos http://atheistplanet.blogspot.com/

The Electric Universe Pt.11

Wallace Thornhill is an Australian physicist. His lifelong investigation of "The Electric Universe" offers a revolutionary view of solar system history, the nature of the Sun, the behavior of comets, and stellar and galactic evolution. He is the co-author, with David Talbott, of Thunderbolts of the Gods and The Electric Universe. The latter will be available on June 1, 2007 David Talbott is a comparative mythologist whose work offers a radical new vantage point on the origin of ancient cultural themes and symbols. His research has been the primary catalyst behind the "Saturn Model," and is the subject of the feature documentary, "Remembering the End of the World." He is the author of The Saturn Myth and co-author (with Wallace Thornhill) of Thunderbolts of the Gods. The two discussed the nature of the electric universe and its effect on comets and planets. The recent discharging of Comet Holmes, in which it became one million times brighter, is evidence of electric phenomena— the theory of an icy comet evaporating in the sun's path doesn't fit this model, said Thornhill. The ancients bore witness to dramatic events in the sky, stated Talbott-- the sphere of Venus radiated with plasma discharge filaments that engaged with Mars in various ways. During this period, Mars was closer to Earth and took up a 20 degree arc in the sky, such that the balance of night and daytime was altered, he said, adding that ancients such as the Egyptians depicted this event with imagery like the cosmic serpent. Thornhill suggested that the planet Saturn was actually a captured brown dwarf star and that at one time Earth was in its cometary sheath. He's also been able to make correct predictions based on the electrical model, including identifying Titan's atmosphere and noting there would be a flash before the main flash in Deep Impact's interaction with comet Tempel 1. The Electric Universe Pt.6

The latter will be available on June 1, 2007 David Talbott is a comparative mythologist whose work offers a radical new vantage point on the origin of ancient ...
