Einstein Gravity and the Expanding Universe

Not long after Einstein proposed the cosmological constant, scientists observed that the universe was much bigger than previously thought; the astronomer Edwin Hubble concluded it was, in fact, expanding. Faced with this knowledge, Einstein renounced his own idea, calling it his "biggest blunder." Though Hubble's new findings were widely accepted, scientists now faced new questions: If the universe was so big and continuously expanding, what was driving expansion? And shouldn't the force of gravity at least be slowing it down?

Towards a Spin Foam Model of Quantum Gravity

Source- http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/loops05/ LOOPS '05- http://loops05.aei.mpg.de/ 'Spin foam models include several different classes of physical theories: lattice gauge theories, dynamical triangulation models of quantum gravity, "chain mail" quantum field theories, and topological string theories. Is there a spin foam model of quantum gravity in 4 dimensions? To address this question, we review recent work on causal dynamical triangulations and the renormalization group. This suggests that quantum gravity is a well-defined theory with the curious property that spacetime is effectively 4-dimensional at large distance scales, but 2-dimensional at very short distance scales. This is just what one might expect from a spin foam model, since spacetime is fundamentally 2-dimensional in these theories. We discuss properties a spin foam model should have in order to approximate general relativity at large distance scales.'

Wallace Thornhill is an Australian physicist. His lifelong investigation of "The Electric Universe" offers a revolutionary view of solar system history, the nature of the Sun, the behavior of comets, and stellar and galactic evolution. He is the co-author, with David Talbott, of Thunderbolts of the Gods and The Electric Universe. The latter will be available on June 1, 2007 David Talbott is a comparative mythologist whose work offers a radical new vantage point on the origin of ancient cultural themes and symbols. His research has been the primary catalyst behind the "Saturn Model," and is the subject of the feature documentary, "Remembering the End of the World." He is the author of The Saturn Myth and co-author (with Wallace Thornhill) of Thunderbolts of the Gods. The two discussed the nature of the electric universe and its effect on comets and planets. The recent discharging of Comet Holmes, in which it became one million times brighter, is evidence of electric phenomena— the theory of an icy comet evaporating in the sun's path doesn't fit this model, said Thornhill. The ancients bore witness to dramatic events in the sky, stated Talbott-- the sphere of Venus radiated with plasma discharge filaments that engaged with Mars in various ways. During this period, Mars was closer to Earth and took up a 20 degree arc in the sky, such that the balance of night and daytime was altered, he said, adding that ancients such as the Egyptians depicted this event with imagery like the cosmic serpent. Thornhill suggested that the planet Saturn was actually a captured brown dwarf star and that at one time Earth was in its cometary sheath. He's also been able to make correct predictions based on the electrical model, including identifying Titan's atmosphere and noting there would be a flash before the main flash in Deep Impact's interaction with comet Tempel 1. Ancient Observatories: Timeless Knowledge - Part 2
NASA Connect video containing four segments as described below. NASA Connect segment explaining the foundations of astronomy and the how the Earth moves relative to the sun. This segment explains how the Earth's tilt creates the 4 seasons. NASA Connect segment explaining how the height of the sun relates to the growing seasons and the length of daylight. This segment describes how Ancient Egyptian and Greek cultures used astronomy in their lives. The segment also contains an activity for exploring how a gnomon works. In the activity students must track the shadows made by a gnomon in 30 minute intervals. The activity will teach students how the length of the shadows and the angles created by the gnomon are related to the position of the sun. NASA Connect segment that shows two examples of how the Navajo used used structures to track progress of the sun in the sky.
