ESnet: Visualizing the Universe at 100 Gbps

Presented by LBNL Computational Research, ESnet and NERSC Approximately 13.7 billion years ago, the Universe was almost homogenous — meaning that every location in the cosmos was similar. Today, this is no longer the case. The modern Universe is rich in structures that include galaxies; clusters of gravitationally bound galaxies; galaxy super-structures called "walls" that span hundreds of millions of light-years; and the relatively empty spaces between superstructures, called voids. All the while, the Universe has been expanding, and in recent epochs the expansion rate has been accelerating. This simulation starts from a nearly homogeneous Universe and reproduces the observable properties of today's objects. Researchers are using this data to understand how the Universe has changed over billions of years.

Measuring the Expanding Universe - An Interview with Saul Perlmutter

This is the science portion of an interview with Saul Perlmutter, 2011 Nobel Prize Winner, by Chancellor Robert Birgeneau during Berkeley CalDay, April 21, 2012. Perlmutter and his team found that instead of a static non-expanding universe or of a contracting or uniformly expanding universe the universe is actually expanding at an increasing rate with the rate doubling over a few billion years. This finding has resulted in the concept of "dark energy" and, based on their data, now thought to comprise about 73% of the universe. In other words physicists have no idea what nearly 3/4ths of the universe is made of! This drives them bonkers (not his words), but also very excited with this new mystery. He describes how important team work is in doing difficult ground breaking research like this. He tells why the easy accessibility of a wide variety of experts and the non-hierarchical atmosphere of Berkeley is so conducive to this type of highly creative work. He describes that, in contrast to common belief where scientists try to prove they are right, they actually spend most of their time trying to see where they could be wrong, particularly when their findings are so unexpected, and why this kind of thinking is so important in approaching the complicated long range problems facing society today.

Physics Nobel Prize 2011 - Brian Schmidt

The Nobel Prize for physics in 2011 was awarded to Brian Schmidt, Adam Riess, and Saul Perlmutter for discovering that the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate. This finding was completely unexpected because it was thought that gravity should slow the expansion of the cosmos. The best current explanation of why the universe is accelerating is that there is some energy tied to empty space which pushes matter apart. This 'Dark Energy' makes up 73% of the universe but is very difficult to detect. Images courtesy of NASA/NASAimages.org and Maritza A. Lara-Lopez

Expanding universe theory wins Nobel Prize

Three US-born scientists have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics after discovering that the universe is expanding at an ever-increasing rate. Saul Perlmutter of Berkeley National Laboratory, along with Brian Schmidt of Australian National University, and Adam Riess of Johns Hopkins University together share the $1.5m prize. Their study of exploding stars revealed that after the Big Bang, the universe continued to expand for several billion years, but at a slower rate than today.

Our Mysterious Universe~Take a Fantastic Rollercoaster Ride with me.......

The universe is always expanding since it's birth. It's mysterious and vast. Are there other beings in this vast Universe, I believe so, what about you?? * the universe began 13.7 billion years ago (i.e., 1,370 million years ago) * the contents of the universe include o 4% atoms (ordinary matter) o 23% of an unknown type of dark matter, and o 73% of a mysterious dark energy * our solar system was formed about 5 billion years ago * the earth was formed about 4.5 billion years ago Some facts from Wikipedia: The current scientific consensus of most cosmologists is that the ultimate fate of the universe depends on its overall shape, how much dark energy it contains, and on the equation of state which determines how the dark energy density responds to the expansion of the universe.[citation needed] Recent observations have shown that, from 7.5 billion years after the Big Bang onwards, the expansion rate of the universe has actually been increasing, concurrent with the Open Universe theory, and marked 'Accelerating' on the graph. I'm not very sure of the name of the song that I used, but it suits the Universe. . If anyone can tell me, I'd appreciate. Do enjoy, rate and comment please. Thank you!!!

Science Bulletins: The Expanding Universe

In 1998, astrophysicists discovered a baffling phenomenon: the Universe is expanding at an ever-faster rate. Either an enigmatic force called dark energy is to blameor a reworking of gravitational theory is in order. In this new Science Bulletins video, watch a Fermilab team assemble the Dark Energy Camera, a device that could finally solve this space-stretching mystery. Science Bulletins is a production of the National Center for Science Literacy, Education, and Technology (NCSLET), part of the Department of Education at the American Museum of Natural History. Each Bulletin is produced by AMNHs curatorial and scientific staff and a team of video producers, designers, writers, and educators using state-of-the-art technologies such as high-definition video and 3-D computer graphics to present the latest research. The Big Rip Theory - a theory of the end of the universe based on its increasing expansion rate

The Big Rip Theory - a theory of the end of the universe based on its increasing expansion rate

This video is taken from the documentary "The Universe : Beyond the Big Bang - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1099790/ " for nonprofit educational purposes. The universe -all the pysical existence we know- started with a big bang some 13 billion years ago and it may end with a big rip some billions years later if the Big Rip Theory is a correct description of the universe. Updated October 4,2011: "Three U.S.-born scientists won the Nobel Prize in physics on Tuesday for overturning a fundamental assumption in their field by showing that the expansion of the universe is constantly accelerating. Their discovery created a new portrait of the eventual fate of the universe: a place of super-low temperatures and black skies unbroken by the light of galaxies moving away from each other at incredible speed. Physicists had assumed for decades that the expansion of the universe was getting ever-slower, meaning that in billions of years it would resemble today's universe in many important ways. Then, working in separate research teams during the 1990s, Saul Perlmutter, Brian Schmidt and Adam Riess found that the light from more than 50 distant exploding stars was far weaker than they expected, meaning that galaxies had to be racing away from each other at increasing speed." -- http://news.yahoo.com/studies-universes-expansion-win-physics-nobel-101853906.html

Measuring earth's vital magnetic field

http://www.euronews.com/ Earth's magnetosphere is an invisible shield, protecting our planet from harmful solar radiation. Many living organisms - from bacteria to insects or birds - seem to rely on Earth's magnetic field to navigate. Man has been doing so for a thousand years since the invention of the compass. But research shows the magnetic field is weakening and scientists are trying to understand why. Some believe it signals a pole reversal in progress, not an uncommon phenomenon in the history of our planet. As ground observatories fail to grasp the whole picture, we are sending magnetometers into orbit to try to measure the magnitude and the direction of the magnetic field. NASA - Magnetic Reconnection

On February 2nd and 3rd there is a 20-35% change of geomagnetic activities in high latitudes. A solar wind stream is heading for Earth. So how do these aurorae happen? This science visualization shows a magnetospheric substorm, during which, magnetic reconnection causes energy to be rapidly released along the field lines in the magnetotail, that part of the magnetosphere that stretches out behind Earth. This released energy is focused down at the poles and the resulting flood of solar particles into the atmosphere, causes the auroras at the North and South Poles. Credit: NASA

12/2/2011 -- Magnetosphere under pressure -- unknown solar storm? Or is it EARTH ITSELF?!

special thanks to youtube user doodledesigns SpaceWeather.com posted the following story. It gives what may the explanation for the heating up of the magnetosphere that you reported in a recent video: "NORTHERN LIGHTS: Auroras are flickering around the Arctic Circle in response to a minor solar wind stream, which is buffeting Earth's magnetic field." "The lights were caused not by a strong magnetic storm but rather by small magnetic fluctuations in the solar wind. During the early hours of Dec. 3rd, the IMF tipped south, partially cancelling Earth's north-pointing magnetic field; solar wind poured through the breach to fuel the display. NOAA forecasters estimate a 14% chance of similar events tonight." http://spaceweather.com/ Sent to: dutchsinse EARTHQUAKE THREAT WATCH for the next several days (ring of fire especially -- large quake possible-- due to a large INTERNAL disturbance in the geo-magnetic fields of the entire planet.)
