The so-called "volcanoes" on Jupiter's moon Io have long been conventionally interpreted as the effect of tidal forces acting on the moon. But a recent scientific paper has announced that this longstanding explanation does not fit with the actual location of the plumes. Is it possible that this failure of theory could cause planetary scientists to reconsider the electrical explanation first offered by astrophysicist Thomas Gold and later by plasma scientists Anthony Peratt and Alex Dessler?
